Migration-based Traveltime Formulation
for Automated Waveform Inversion

It is convenient to set the waveform inversion problem as the minimization of the distance between recorded and modeled measures, as there is no need for any picking of horizons.

The classical least-squares approach consists in minimizing the data misfit with respect to the Earth material properties. Unfortunately, this requires the use of global minimization methods.

The Migration-Based TravelTime (MBTT) approach consists then in separating the propagation and reflection effects, and parameterizing the reflectivity in the time domain via a migration step. This enlarges the attraction domain of the global minimum, and thus allows the use of local minimization methods.
